Quadrupole Ion Mass Spectrometry

Chiral preference studies, studies of gas phase clusters, and proteomics are among the projects tackled with the Finnigan LCQ Deca quadrapole ion trap mass spectrometer.  The LCQ is a workhorse in the Beauchamp group.

The ion trap (denoted on the figure by the endcap and ring electrodes) is like an "electric field test tube" where ions can be isolated and subjected to Collision Induced Dissociation (CID).  Often, simple dissociation is not the only result of CID; bond formation, hydration and dehydration, and many other gas phase processes occur.
